March, The Dirty Reveal
March is the season of what I call 'The Dirty Reveal.'
I find March kind of sucky, actually.
T. S. Eliot said April is the cruelest month.
For me, March really fits that title.
As I look back on my life timeline,
almost every major ending happened in March.
Jobs ending, relationships breaking, deaths,
deep inner confrontations and shifts.
All of these endings.
The weather is extreme. Volatile.
We’re still kind of burrowed in our homes.
And yet, the blue sky of increasing spring daylight beckons.
Those of us in the States have had quite a winter. Where I live in the Hudson Valley, we have had 3 - 4 foot snow drifts pocked with snow plow stones and the incremental accretion of dirt that seems to settle on the old, unmelting snow.
Most of the snow here has almost completely disappeared. And as always, it reveals whatever didn’t get completed. The unfinishedness of our lives. In advance of winter’s burrowing in.
Every year as much as I am prepared, it’s both kinda shocking and humbling to me sometimes…..the messes exposed.
And so March, and spring in general, is the breakup of the old order. Things held in stasis arise with the demand for confrontation, for being seen and attended to.
Hence, “The Reveal.” Not an easy time…and essential as life is relentless in pushing through the cold and dark dirt so that something new can grow...again.
Thermogenesis
Here’s a new concept I came across recently: thermogenesis.
Thermogenesis is the metabolic process of heat production in certain organisms. It occurs in all warm-blooded animals, and also in a few species of thermogenic plants.
Certain spring ephemerals, crocuses in particular, emit heat from their petals unfurling that melts the snow!
What’s dormant in your life that can be activated by thermogenic alchemical processes / reactions?
May we take heart...it’s just nature’s way.
A delicate plant pushing through.
Nature shows us that even in what feels like we’re in the midst of heartbreaking or profound deep shifts, we possess inner resources generating the fire
we need to be aligned with life’s relentless demand that we grow.
We all possess this innate metabolic capacity to grow.
To awaken from dormancy into full bloom.
Like the crocus, to reveal beauty in the harshest of circumstances.
